The Hidden Dance Between Confidence and Self-Doubt

Most people believe confidence and self-doubt are polar opposites—one to be embraced, the other to be eliminated. But what if they were actually two sides of the same coin, each offering essential insights for personal and professional growth?

By using Deep MCT, a process of integrating polarities, we can shift our relationship with both confidence and self-doubt, allowing them to serve us rather than control us. Instead of being pulled in opposing directions, we can learn to navigate both states with clarity and wisdom.

The Illusion of Over-Identification with Self-Doubt

We all experience self-doubt—it’s an inevitable part of pushing our limits. The problem arises when we over-identify with it. When self-doubt defines us, it creates hesitation, second-guessing, and avoidance. But when we see it for what it is—a temporary visitor, not a permanent identity—we gain the freedom to act in spite of it.

Think about a time when you felt completely confident. What did it feel like? Where did it show up in your body? In my own experience, confidence isn’t about forcing belief—it’s about presence, trust, and surrendering to the structure and flow of the moment.

Now, contrast that with a moment of deep self-doubt. For me, this shows up in situations where I feel out of my depth, such as coaching wrestling. In those moments, my mind races, my body tightens, and fear takes hold. But when I consciously hold both experiences in awareness, I notice something fascinating: neither state is permanent.

Confidence and Self-Doubt as Invitations

The key isn’t to suppress self-doubt or chase confidence—it’s to recognize what each moment is inviting us into:

Confidence invites humility and gratitude. When we’re in a state of knowing, we can trust ourselves without arrogance, understanding that this clarity isn’t about us—it’s about being in tune with the moment.

Self-doubt invites kindness and patience. When we’re uncertain, it’s an opportunity to practice self-compassion. Instead of overcompensating or shutting down, we can acknowledge our limits without letting them define us.

This realization allows us to integrate both states into a unified approach to life and leadership.

From Overcompensation to Grounded Presence

For years, I felt the need to overcompensate in moments of self-doubt, offering more information, more strategies, more “helpful” advice—especially in situations where I felt less competent. But as I worked through Deep MCT, I saw something profound: my value isn’t in having all the answers.

Instead, my role—whether coaching clients, supporting athletes, or leading transformational work—is to be a strong, grounded presence. To trust that what I know in the moment is enough. To allow both confidence and self-doubt to exist without being consumed by either.

Achievement vs. Fulfillment: The Deeper Polarity

At its core, my struggle with confidence and self-doubt was pointing me toward an even deeper polarity—one that many high performers grapple with: the tension between drive and inner peace, between achievement and fulfillment.

Achievement pulls us toward results, measurable success, and external validation.

Fulfillment pulls us toward meaning, presence, and the deeper satisfaction of simply being.

Both are valuable. The challenge is integrating them in a way that allows us to pursue goals without losing ourselves in the chase.

Embracing the Full Spectrum of Experience

So, what does this look like in practice? It means showing up fully, even when self-doubt whispers in the background. It means allowing confidence to guide us while remaining open to learning and growth. It means trusting that we don’t need to have all the answers—we just need to be present and engaged in the process.

Next time you find yourself caught in self-doubt, try this: instead of fighting it or overcompensating, simply acknowledge it. See it as part of the experience, not a barrier to it. And remember—confidence and self-doubt are not enemies. They are invitations to a more integrated way of being.

Call to Action

If this resonates with you and you want to explore how to integrate confidence and self-doubt in your own life, I invite you to schedule a discovery call. Let’s uncover how you can navigate these polarities with greater ease, clarity, and power.

In the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we find a profound truth that extends far beyond the mats and into the realm of personal and professional development. It’s a truth that I’ve come to understand intimately through my years of practice, coaching, and exploring the depths of human potential. The notion that “The Untrained Mind Equals an Untrained Man” is not just a concept limited to the gentle art of Jiu-Jitsu; it’s a reflection of the broader human experience.

In Jiu-Jitsu, as in life, we often encounter situations where knowing something intellectually isn’t synonymous with the ability to execute it in practice. I’ve seen countless practitioners attend seminars or regular classes, absorbing techniques that make perfect sense on the surface. However, when the real test arrives during live training or sparring, the clarity of these techniques can vanish in the heat of the moment. This phenomenon teaches us a profound lesson about the limitations of the untrained mind.

It’s akin to the experience of working with someone new, often referred to as a white belt in Jiu-Jitsu. They come to the mat untrained, devoid of the technical skills and experience necessary to navigate the intricate dance of this martial art. Instead, they rely on brute strength, speed, adrenaline, and often, their ego to survive. It’s crucial to note that they’re not intentionally trying to be difficult or cause harm; they are simply untrained.

This concept holds a mirror to the broader scope of personal and professional development. How many times have we encountered individuals who are well-versed in theories, strategies, or principles, yet when it comes to real-life application, they flounder? It’s not uncommon to find people who have read numerous self-help books, attended workshops, and devoured wisdom, but their actions don’t align with their knowledge.

The untrained mind is like a white belt in life. It lacks the practical skills to defend itself against the challenges and uncertainties that come its way. When faced with adversity, it resorts to the same survival instincts we see in a novice on the Jiu-Jitsu mat. It’s an instinctual reaction born out of fear and insecurity.

So, what does this all mean, and how can we harness this insight to enhance our personal and professional lives? The key lies in the recognition of the untrained mind’s potential. It’s not a fixed state; rather, it’s a starting point. Like a white belt stepping onto the mat, we all begin with a lack of experience and skill. However, the difference lies in our commitment to growth and learning.

Just as the white belt can evolve into a black belt through dedication, practice, and a willingness to embrace the journey, so too can the untrained mind transform into a reservoir of knowledge, wisdom, and skill. It’s a process that requires humility, perseverance, and a genuine desire to learn. When we approach life with the same mindset we bring to the Jiu-Jitsu mat, we begin to unlock our true potential.

The untrained mind is not a limitation; it’s an opportunity. By acknowledging our untrained aspects and embracing the journey of learning and growth, we can transcend our limitations and become the best versions of ourselves. Just as a white belt becomes a black belt, our untrained minds can become a wellspring of knowledge, strength, and understanding.

In closing, let me leave you with this inquiry: What aspects of your life might benefit from the recognition that an untrained mind is not a hindrance, but a canvas upon which you can paint your journey of growth and self-improvement? Remember, the path to becoming a black belt in life begins with acknowledging the white belt within you.

I attended an event this past weekend where there were 16 passionate speakers, many of them were TEDx speakers.

A majority of the speakers were pointing to the fact that if people don’t have a purpose they’re prone to loneliness, depression and a lack of meaning in their lives.

As I engaged with fellow participants, there was a both a palatable anxiousness and/or excitement in people’s desire to find their purpose.

Like purpose is somehow the missing link to a high quality life experience.

You see the presenters made a logical and compelling presentation with regards to human suffering, and finding your purpose was offered as a prescription to living a better life than the one they are currently living.

Time to Reflect

So my question is,

Is it true people need to find and live their purpose in order to have a high quality life?

I would like to encourage you to explore purpose for yourself.

1. What does purpose look like to you?

2. What are your ideas about purpose?

3. What do all human being share in common when it comes to purpose?

And The Most Miserable People Are…

In my own personal experience along with my experience of working with hundreds and hundreds of people over the last 25 years.

What I’ve discovered is people in search of purpose or in the pursuit of happiness are some of the most miserable and anxious people I’ve ever met.

So here’s the problem as I see it, people have innocently made purpose a thing.

Purpose is not a thing, it’s actually a feeling.

And it is this feeling that has the power to guide people through life, helping them navigate the up’s and down’s.

Here’s the real problem, human suffer and struggle and have a wide range of human experiences. This is true.

The problem is human beings don’t know the source of their experience.

And if they did they would stop looking outside of themselves for prescriptions to live a better life that alone would improve their quality of life.

Most people are looking at purpose as a prescription for living a better life.

Once they find their purpose, align with their purpose and live their purpose their life will be more rewarding and fulfilling is their logic.

The problem is that’s not how purpose and meaning actually works.

Looking for your purpose creates the same amount of anxiety as a lost set of car keys, it makes people really anxious and stressed out.

It also bums people out for the fact that they don’t know something or have lost something.

When people get bummed out they typically start to blame themselves or make themselves wrong for the fact that they’ve lost their car keys and in this case they have lost their purpose or their purposes has some how eluded them.

Finding, aligning, in living your purpose is not the solution to a low quality of life.

Looking In New Direction

What is necessary is understanding the human experience.

What matters most is to understand where your experience is actually coming from.

When people stop anxiously searching for their purpose but instead spend more time understanding the nature of life and the nature of the human experience what people often find is that their purpose finds them.

Natures Clue

I often share the following analogy with people about purpose.

Honey bees wake up every morning thinking that their purpose in life is to harvest nectar and make honey.

When in truth a honey bee’s greater purpose is at a 90 degree angle of their honey making intention.

You could say that the honey bees real purpose is to cross pollinate.

Human beings are like money bees. Waking up each day chasing the nectar of life to make money.

And if human beings would simply, stop, reflect and look in a new direction, they too would see that they are already part of a much greater purpose.

You already have a purpose but you just looking in the wrong direction.

I am on a mission to help people stop searching for things outside of themselves and commit to looking within as their primary goal in life.

Much love,

The Mindfulness Communication Technique (MCT) is based on the execution of completed communication cycles.

Communication cycles are nothing new and have been around for long time. A completed communication cycle is what makes the MCT so powerful. MCT’s are basically a formal way of communicating and relating, so that these communication cycles can come to completion. With each completed communication cycle the mind is quieted. When the mind is clear, the mind is at peace and when the mind is at peace the world is at peace too.

Most of us have had the experience of a social encounter where you were asked a question, and before you could respond the other person interrupted you or started to ask you another question before you could answer. The result is an incomplete communications which then gets stored in your mind.

Or, perhaps you have tried to engage with someone by asking them a question about something, and they go completely off topic with some sort of novel monologue that’s irrelevant. You find yourself trying to listen and be present but are left bewildered by the tangents of the person’s response and communication. Again, incomplete communication cycles result in neither party feeling gotten or understood, and end up cluttering the mind.

By practicing MCT you are entering into a formal communicating and relating process that cleans up incomplete communication cycles, and clears the mind.

MCT is practiced with a partner for an agreed upon time. Most practices are in general either 30 or 40 minutes long.

The do’s and don’t of MCT

MCT is not a social conversation.

MCT is not a dialogue.

MCT is not about giving advice, coaching or counseling.

MCT is an opportunity for the speaking partner to practice authentic communication by communicating only what arises for the speaking partner as a result of their self-inquiry or contemplation. The speaking partner then communicates to the listening partner whatever arises in their consciousness as a result of the inquiry to their partner without adding anything or taking anything away.

MCT invites the speaking partner to communicate from their personal experience only.

MCT requires that the speaking partner refrain from referring to whatever their partner previously communicated.

MCT requires that the speaking partner refrain from using the word we, you, you know, you know what I mean, or anyone’s personal name. Instead use the words me, I, other or another. Some examples might be… what I am present to about myself is… or I feel another has treated me really unfair, and I am angered about that.

MCT is a meditation practice with the listening partner putting their 100% attention on their partner. If your mind starts to wander or you start thinking about what you are going to say next, just let it go and bring your attention back to your partner. This means good eye contact, and maintaining a strong connection to your partner. Refrain from fidgeting or drawing any attention to yourself.

MCT’s are an opportunity for the listener to practice open and non-judgmental listening. Listen without facial expressions, head nods, hand gestures or sounds.

MCT asks that the listening partner simply listen and understand to the best of their ability whatever your partner is trying to communicate. You are not to agree or disagree, or evaluate their communication or the content of their communication in anyway.

People are often surprised by how relaxed, clear and energized they feel after practicing MCT.

When he started there was no certification in the industry.

He studied at Coach University; they offered the first Coaching certification training program. It was founded by a man considered to be the grandfather of Life Coaching today, Thomas Leonard, who’s now passed away. Thomas had information that was leading the way in the field.

In 1993, Greg ended up studying with one of Thomas’s students, who mentored him when he was getting into coaching. His experience has stood the test of time, and his coaching has been his sole source of income. Greg’s background allows him to have conversations on an array of topics, he can converse on businesses, profitability, marketing all the way to the other end of the big life questions, who am I, why am I here, what’s my purpose, etc.

It’s rare to find somebody that can hold these kinds of discussions with business owners, professionals, CEOs. One of the most common things that happen after three business coaching sessions, he indicated, is that his clients get personal and dealing with that human element is probably the biggest part of coaching.

Greg indicated that there are typically three common challenges that most people need from a business coach, and these are:

1. How do I get more clients and more business?

2. How do I improve my leadership skills?

3. How do I influence and make an impact within my organization or on my team and how do I stay more focused in this day of distractions and chaos?

To resolve some of those problems, Greg suggests that they step away from it, take a deep breath and look at what’s going on there; getting more clients? Going out and chase them? A big part of coaching is asking the clients whom they need to attract? Better clients rather than going out there and chasing after any client. So they can start looking at the function of who is the business owner, who is the company and asking the question, are we attracting the type client that we want?

From a leadership point of view, Greg is interested in developing people as leaders. Specifically, in developing mindful leadership and not authoritarian leadership. Somebody who is centered, calm and non-reactive is what he wants to develop in a leader. In order to do that the person must have a certain level of personal development, if not; they are going to be very reactionary to situations, employees, business deals, clients, etc.

So there are foundational pieces that needs to be developed with all of his clients. He indicated that most of clients have an issue with communication, lack of agreements, lack of boundaries and mainly people not keeping their word. So a big part of leadership is keeping commitments. If a leader breaks that commitment, the team and the rest of the company loses faith in him/her, the workability, the performance and the growth of the company will then diminish over time. So Greg teaches leaders the power of keeping their word and how that will strengthen their integrity. He would also ensure that his clients know what they need as a leader, as an individual and having the proper mindset and attitude. He noted that most times leaders become stressed especially by working 50, 60 or 75 hours of work each week.

He stated that leaders need to reset their mind and become more mindful. They must practice some form of reflection, mindfulness practice, meditation, and clear the mind so that they can go in and be a better leader. Greg believes that by introducing mindfulness into leadership will increase innovation and creativity.

So what is mindfulness? Greg indicated that mindfulness is a counter-intuitive approach of going within and being with yourself. Through that process, space is created within the individual. This practice of emptying the mind becomes very powerful in the creative process of innovation. Learning to step into the boardroom, step into work from a non-reactive point of view is the key.

There are all kinds of research that shows a mindfulness helps in eliminating depression, reducing stress, overcoming insomnia, etc. Most of his clients become overwhelmed when everything hits the fan, it’s because there’s no space within themselves, and they eventually lose focus.

In many respects a mindfulness practice helps to cultivate focus and attention so that when his clients move out into the world, they can take mindfulness practice into the work and the world. One of his passion projects is helping everyone increase their self-awareness through what he calls Mindfulness Communication Technique or MCT. Helping people acquire it allows people to be more mindful, allows them to do better work, be more creative and innovative, sleep better, stay more focused and be more organized.

“This is a practice that I am passionate about getting out into the world,” he indicated. At his workshops or retreats, he and his participants can become partners and practice this exercise not only at the workshops but continue it when they go home through Skype and Google hangouts.

The trend that he noticed is that the advancement of technology brought his coaching to a wider audience. This is done through Skype and Google Hangouts. He is enjoying that, and it’s moving away from face to face coaching sessions from before. He is looking now at creating webinars,“I think the public at large has a greater accessibility to it and those are the trends that I’m looking at”.

“The way we communicate with others and with ourselves
ultimately determines the quality of our lives”

Leadership development needs to be an inside-out process that focuses less on competencies and skill acquisition and more on increasing your self-awareness and understanding how your communication and behavior impacts others.

Unfortunately, many leaders don’t realize the implications of their communication and few people have had the opportunity to practice true authentic communication and active listening. When you don’t know what it takes to be successful at communication, it makes running your organization much more difficult then it needs to be.

Successful leadership is a by-product of those who can get their ideas across to others. Achieving excellence in communication is not something you can buy but must be earned as a result of trail and error practice. Leadership success ultimately boils down to the sustainable impact and influence that you have on others.

Communication is fundamental in every area of your life and perhaps the most important skill leaders will need to make positive changes in the world of business.

Communication is equally important for a manager striving to improve productivity and performance, a parent wanting to improve your relationship with your children, or any interpersonal relationship that you would like to improve – communication is the most important tool for getting results and enhancing your quality of life.

This workshop is designed to teach you the basics of the Mindfulness Communication Technique so that you may continue to practice in business meetings, annual retreats or with friends and family after the workshop if you’d like.
