An Interview with San Diego Voyager

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Clowminzer.

Greg, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.

I was a stressed-out young professional who was disillusioned with my career path and lifestyle back in the day. I was on a fast track at the time and became a partner and vice president of a commercial investment real estate company specializing in sales and acquisition of multi-family properties. I was very active in the community and held several leadership positions at both a local and state level.

The good news is I was making a decent living which afforded me to invest in myself. As I begin learning about myself and what made me tick and I started to get really excited about what I was learning and couldn’t wait to share it with others. Although I was quite shocked that others didn’t share my same enthusiasm for my new understandings.

It took me about 2 years to build up the courage to leave my career and start the next chapter. I will never forget the day that I handed in my letter of resignation and spontaneously began crying uncontrollably, tears and snot rolling down my face ruining my silk tie and splashing off my Italian shoes.

It was at that moment that who I thought I was came to a crashing halt. It was like falling into the abyss. I hadn’t realized how much my ego identity was wrapped up in my titles and career until that moment. My resignation didn’t come with a well thought out plan, it was more like jumping out of an airplane without a parachute. I figured it might take me some time to reinvent myself but then I had a little help.

After I resigned I spent much of my time hiking and rock climbing. Until one day I was out rock climbing and fell 35 feet without being tied into my rope. Luckily, I am still alive to talk about it but did end up breaking both my ankles and fracturing my pelvis and spent the next 5 and a half months in a wheelchair.

To say this event was life-changing would be an understatement. Something cracked open inside of me that completely changed how I experienced life. For the first time in I don’t know in how long, I experienced a sense of quiet and beingness that had somehow gotten away from me. It’s like a whole new world opened up for me.

As I healed and allowed myself to be, I was inspired to teach and support others to live a life of no regrets. I originally created a one day program called Passion For A Change which was designed to help people get in touch with their dreams and passions. The program was a real hit and people started making significant changes in their lives.

This was back in 1994 when coaching was in its infancy I had this idea about offering to coach to people who had attended my program to help them transition from where there were to where they were headed and about 30% of them said yes. And, coaching was born. As I began to call myself a coach I got a lot of blank stares or comments like what sports do you, coach.

I was fortunate enough to have crossed paths with a guy name Thomas Leonard who was starting up the first coaching certification program called Coach University. Most coaches these days don’t realize the impact of Thomas’s work but he is also instrumental in the founding of the ICF which is the International Coaching Foundation.

So, a big part of my professional coaches training comes from Coach University along with hiring my own coach. As my coaching visibility grew I ended up helping professionals much like myself get clear on both their personal and professional goals.

My clients were mostly professional service provider, attorneys, dentists, loans officers, financial planners, insurance, real estate, chiropractors.

At the same time, I had a growing interest in eastern philosophy and esoteric teaching and stumbled upon some unknown but remarkable spiritual teachers who took me under their wings. I started to share these teachings with some of my clients and they were really interested, in fact, they were more interested in the spiritual teachings then the how to make more money stuff. As my understandings and insights deepened I found myself hosting weekly gatherings where people would come hear what I had to say and it grew to were 40-50 people would gather each week.

After about 8-9 years of teaching, I notice that people were not looking within themselves for wisdom but looking to me. So, I pulled the plug and stopped teaching for about 3 years. I still had a small coaching practice but I took some time to reflect and looked deeply into the nature of how to serve people in a way the truly empowers them. I gradually started to invite people to meet with me and learn how to tap into their own innate wisdom.

Fast forward to today and that’s all I do these days is teach people a new way to think about thought and how to unlock their innate wisdom and human potential. These days I am dedicated to inspiring, educating and encouraging high-performance professionals to look within as there primary goal in life.

Greg Clowminzer is a pioneering transformational business and life coach who has a unique way of helping professionals by educating them how their minds work and how human beings create their experience. He offers year-long coaching engagements, live events, and webinars to professionals and entrepreneurs who are dealing with business challenges and performance related issues.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?

The first challenge is when you are the first one to the party and no one is there yet. What I mean by that is that when I started coaching wasn’t even on the map so I had to go around town and educate people about what coaching was. People didn’t take you to serious back in the day.

The second thing that I ran into is people would see thier friends and family start to change and they would wonder who is this guy and what kind of therapist is he. I actually had people giving me a hard time in the beginning say that I was practicing therapy without a license.

Back in the day company’s were very freaked out about anything that was spiritual or non-linear. Having been at this for so long, I was one of a very few coaches in town.

Nowadays everyone is seemly a coach and with the help of the internet, it’s sometimes hard to find out who the real deal is until you speak to someone in person. Having a home based business is not for the faint of heart as it can get lonely at times.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

I have been in the coaching and training business since 1994 and have coached a wide range of clients and situations.

These days my coaching practice is focused on working with high-performance service providers who have a business, personal or life challenge that’s impeding their quality of life and or a performance related issue.

I am part of a global community that is dedicated to bringing forth a new paradigm for understanding human performance that is revolutionary. This new understanding is so simple yet so powerful that and teaches people how their minds actually work not how they think they work.

Apart from one on one coaching my favorite thing to do is work with small groups of people sharing the inside out understanding of how peoples minds work, and where people experiences are coming from. I find a tremendous amount of joy witnessing the awakening of the human spirit.

What were you like growing up?

I loved the ocean and grew up surfing in Point Loma and Ocean Beach. I had some very difficult challenges growing up, having to do with loss at a pretty young age, which was a major set backs for me. As a result, I feel like I was kind of a late bloomer.

Most of my youth I was dealing with a lot of personal issues leaving me feeling quite lost, confused and very insecure and I covered it all up by pretending to be a tough guy.

Today I am honestly grateful for my past as it is what has led me down this path of helping and serving others.

If you would you like to discus how we might work together, book an appointment on my calendar below.

Guest Post From: Small Business Trend Setters

For over 20 years Greg Clowminzer has been practicing coaching and considers himself to be one of the pioneers in this area. When he started there was no certification in the industry.

He studied at Coach University; they offered the first Coaching certification training program. It was founded by a man considered to be the grandfather of Life Coaching today, Thomas Leonard, who’s now passed away. Thomas had information that was leading the way in the field.

In 1993, Greg ended up studying with one of Thomas’s students, who mentored him when he was getting into coaching. His experience has stood the test of time, and his coaching has been his sole source of income. Greg’s background allows him to have conversations on an array of topics, he can converse on businesses, profitability, marketing all the way to the other end of the big life questions, who am I, why am I here, what’s my purpose, etc.

It’s rare to find somebody that can hold these kinds of discussions with business owners, professionals, CEOs. One of the most common things that happen after three business coaching sessions, he indicated, is that his clients get personal and dealing with that human element is probably the biggest part of coaching.

Greg indicated that there are typically three common challenges that most people need from a business coach, and these are:

1. How do I get more clients and more business?

2. How do I improve my leadership skills?

3. How do I influence and make an impact within my organization or on my team and how do I stay more focused in this day of distractions and chaos?

To resolve some of those problems, Greg suggests that they step away from it, take a deep breath and look at what’s going on there; getting more clients? Going out and chase them? A big part of coaching is asking the clients whom they need to attract? Better clients rather than going out there and chasing after any client. So they can start looking at the function of who is the business owner, who is the company and asking the question, are we attracting the type client that we want?

From a leadership point of view, Greg is interested in developing people as leaders. Specifically, in developing mindful leadership and not authoritarian leadership. Somebody who is centered, calm and non-reactive is what he wants to develop in a leader. In order to do that the person must have a certain level of personal development, if not; they are going to be very reactionary to situations, employees, business deals, clients, etc.

So there are foundational pieces that needs to be developed with all of his clients. He indicated that most of clients have an issue with communication, lack of agreements, lack of boundaries and mainly people not keeping their word. So a big part of leadership is keeping commitments. If a leader breaks that commitment, the team and the rest of the company loses faith in him/her, the workability, the performance and the growth of the company will then diminish over time. So Greg teaches leaders the power of keeping their word and how that will strengthen their integrity. He would also ensure that his clients know what they need as a leader, as an individual and having the proper mindset and attitude. He noted that most times leaders become stressed especially by working 50, 60 or 75 hours of work each week.

He stated that leaders need to reset their mind and become more mindful. They must practice some form of reflection, mindfulness practice, meditation, and clear the mind so that they can go in and be a better leader. Greg believes that by introducing mindfulness into leadership will increase innovation and creativity.

So what is mindfulness? Greg indicated that mindfulness is a counter-intuitive approach of going within and being with yourself. Through that process, space is created within the individual. This practice of emptying the mind becomes very powerful in the creative process of innovation. Learning to step into the boardroom, step into work from a non-reactive point of view is the key.

There are all kinds of research that shows a mindfulness helps in eliminating depression, reducing stress, overcoming insomnia, etc. Most of his clients become overwhelmed when everything hits the fan, it’s because there’s no space within themselves, and they eventually lose focus.

In many respects a mindfulness practice helps to cultivate focus and attention so that when his clients move out into the world, they can take mindfulness practice into the work and the world. One of his passion projects is helping everyone increase their self-awareness through what he calls Mindfulness Communication Technique or MCT. Helping people acquire it allows people to be more mindful, allows them to do better work, be more creative and innovative, sleep better, stay more focused and be more organized.

“This is a practice that I am passionate about getting out into the world,” he indicated. At his workshops or retreats, he and his participants can become partners and practice this exercise not only at the workshops but continue it when they go home through Skype and Google hangouts.

The trend that he noticed is that the advancement of technology brought his coaching to a wider audience. This is done through Skype and Google Hangouts. He is enjoying that, and it’s moving away from face to face coaching sessions from before. He is looking now at creating webinars,“I think the public at large has a greater accessibility to it and those are the trends that I’m looking at”.

But if you are picking a coach to work with you, you can’t afford to make the wrong decision and start all over again with someone else. So how do you separate the sales spin from the reality and be confident that the coach you chose is right for you?

First of all, take some time over the choice. If it works, coaching could be one of the best investments you can make – for you personally and for your business. But despite this, people often rush into a decision or jump for the first coach they speak to. So, before you take your pick make sure you find out these things about your coach:

What is their main coaching focus? If you need a business coach, you need a business coach – not a life coach who happens to do some business coaching. Many coaches will offer a range of services, but find out what their real specialism is – or at least the type of coaching they have the most passion for.

What business experience do they have? It is perfectly acceptable to ask a coach about their professional background, including asking for details of what they did or achieved for the companies they worked for. You can be coached by someone who has only operated several layers lower in organizations, but to get real success you need to know they have experience at your level.

Are you comfortable with them on a personal level? Rapport is important here. Coaching will sometimes take you into unfamiliar areas and challenge your comfort zone. You need to make sure you work with someone who you personally feel comfortable with – this is not about expecting to be best friends (which is not what you need), but knowing that you can relax enough in their company.

Have they got experience of your specific skills challenges? If you already know there is one particular skill or competency you want coaching on, such as influencing skills or time management, make sure this is an area the coach has experience of. Similarly if you work in a specific sector and want someone who understands the specific challenges you face, check their background includes this.

How much of their time is spent coaching? Beware of consultants or trainers who say they are coaches but actually spend a very small part of their time coaching people. There is a huge difference between a full-time trainer who occasionally adds coaching onto a specific package and a professional coach!

What management experience have they had? This may sound obvious, but if you manage a large team of people in your business you need someone who can understand the dynamics and challenges that brings. There are many coaches out there who will have managed only a handful of people or none at all.

So, with all this can you be sure that coaching will work? Absolutely not – coaching is a unique relationship and you’ll never know until you give it a try. But, if you ask these questions, your chance of success will be far greater. – and you could well find yourself working with someone who can help you transform your business and life.

Most coaches offer a free introductory session to alleviate the fear of taking the next step and working with them. Take advantage of the offer and seize the opportunity to see if you are ready to be coached to reaching your ultimate goals.

Would you like to learn more about coaching?

Today there is a growing knowledge of the term business coach. Not many years back, very few people were familiar with the term or exactly what one did. More familiarity was in terms such as business advisors and business consultants. Even though these terms are often put in the same category as coaching, they are not the same.

When you think of a coach what comes to mind? Is it a sports coach? There is soccer, football, softball, baseball, basketball, to name a few. Professional sports people are very familiar with the benefits of coaching. Today most teams have at least one coach on staff or seek out help for various performance related issues.

What are some benefits of hiring a coach?

Coaches through encouragement and accountability get their players or clients to work harder for peak performance.

Coaches enhance performance through more effective methods or skills they learned or figured out for themselves.

Coaches offer realistic assessment of where you are and how to improve.

Coaches help to identify personal strengths and weaknesses and help you focus on what you do best.

Coaches help you brainstorm for ideas for needed changes and help you plan how to make the change.

There are a variety of coaches for all areas of your life. There are life coaches, organizational coaches, business coaches, sport coaches, executive coaches, career coaches; you name it and you can probably find a coach to suit your needs. The greatest commonality with all of these types are their goal is to help you reach the greatest potential in the area of focus.

The most successful people today either have had a coach or a mentor in their life. Having someone to guide you in the direction of your goals and give guidance for success is one of the greatest decisions a person can do for self-improvement.

With the abundance of coaches available today, some things to be aware of when searching for one:

Compatibility-when speaking and spending time with the coach you should feel comfortable and able to speak openly.

Professionalism-is the coach credible in the fact they are competent in the area of your focus and able to bring knowledge, skills, and good advice? Do they have references?

Listening skills-are they a good listener? If your first conversation, phone or in person, is one-sided and mainly from them you may want to consider interviewing others. It is the coach‘s job to help you find your inner wisdom while giving guidance and advice but they can only do this if they are listening effectively.

Most coaches offer a free introductory session to alleviate the fear of taking the next step and working with them. Take advantage of the offer and seize the opportunity to see if you are ready to be coached to reaching your ultimate goals.
