The Masculine Journey: Why Every Man Needs a Male Support System

Men need other men to hold them accountable and challenge them to be better. We were not meant to do life alone. – John Eldredge

The importance of having a good coach in both business and life cannot be overstated. However, there is a debate on whether men should choose male or female coaches. While there is nothing inherently wrong with having a female coach, there are several reasons why men may benefit more from having a male coach.

First, men and women have different life experiences and perspectives. A male coach is more likely to understand and relate to the challenges that men face in their personal and professional lives. For example, men may struggle with issues related to masculinity, such as feelings of inadequacy, vulnerability, and the pressure to succeed. A male coach can provide a safe and supportive environment for men to address these issues and develop strategies to overcome them.

Second, men may find it easier to communicate with a male coach. Men may feel more comfortable opening up to someone of the same gender, especially when discussing sensitive issues. Male coaches are better equipped to understand and address the emotional needs of men, as they have firsthand experience with the challenges that men face in their personal and professional lives.

Third, male coaches can provide unique insights and guidance that female coaches may not be able to offer. For example, male coaches can share their experiences and perspectives on navigating male-dominated industries and workplaces, such as finance, technology, and construction. Male coaches can also provide guidance on building strong relationships with other men, both in and out of the workplace.

Having a male coach can be particularly beneficial for men who are struggling with their personal identity, life purpose and creating healthy relationships. A male coach can provide a supportive and non-judgmental environment for men to explore their thoughts and feelings about what is means to be a man or masculinity, and offer guidance on how to navigate these issues in their personal and professional lives.

While there is nothing inherently wrong with having a female coach, men may benefit more from having a male coach. A male coach can provide a unique perspective, offer guidance on navigating work life balance and relationships, and create a safe and supportive environment for men to address sensitive issues. Ultimately, the most important factor in choosing a coach is finding someone who can help you achieve your goals, regardless of their gender.

The importance of having a strong support system is critical for any man’s journey through life. However, men often face challenges in finding a support system that meets their unique needs. While the coaching industry has made significant strides in offering options for women to be supported by women, men are still struggling to find the same level of support.

One reason for this disparity is that the coaching industry often attracts more women than men. As a result, there are fewer strong male coaches available for men to choose from. This can be frustrating for men who are looking for someone who can understand their experiences and provide guidance on how to navigate the challenges they face in their personal and professional lives.

Additionally, many men have been socialized to believe that asking for help or seeking support is a sign of weakness. This can make it difficult for men to reach out for help when they need it, and they may feel ashamed or embarrassed to admit that they need support. This stigma can also prevent men from seeking out coaching services and prevent them from finding a support system that can help them thrive.

However, the truth is that seeking support is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of strength. Having the courage to ask for help and support when you need it is an essential part of the masculine journey. Men should not be afraid to seek out coaching services and find a coach who can provide the support, guidance, and accountability they need to achieve their goals.

Moreover, men should not overlook the value of building relationships with other men. Creating strong male friendships and cultivating a community of support can be a powerful tool in navigating life’s challenges. Men who have strong support systems are more likely to be resilient, successful, and fulfilled in their personal and professional lives.

Approximately 25 to 40 percent of Fortune 500 companies use executive coaches, according to the Hay Group, an international human-resources consultancy.

Every man needs a support system that can help them navigate life’s challenges and achieve their goals. While the coaching industry may have more options for women to be supported by women, men should not be discouraged. It is essential to seek out coaching services and build relationships with other men, who can offer the support, guidance, and accountability they need to thrive on their masculine journey.

It Matters Where To Look For Success And Well Being

Have you ever heard the sage advice of look within and there you will find the answer to all of your problems.

But, what the heck does that actually mean.

Having been on my own path for years I would get this kind of advice, either directly from my teachers or the types of books that I had immersed myself in.

First of all the times that I was most prone to look within was when I was in a low mood and in a disturbed state of mind.

Any guesses what I saw when I looked within. You got it, it was a shit show.

So when I meditated I would be bombarded with negative and insecure thoughts raging though the system.

When I journaled it was more like vomiting my poor is me and victim consciousness unto countless pages within my journals. I dreaded the thought of anyone seeing the depressing content of my mind that made it’s way to the pages of my journals.

When I looked within I just kept bumping into my ego, my strengths and weaknesses. As a result I would strategize how to compensate for my short comings and highlight my virtues but I never saw that I was simply reacting my personal thinking.

You see in those early years of looking within all I could see were my personal thoughts. Getting tripped up on my personal thinking was a trap and it  wasn’t what my teachers where pointing to when they said look within.

But, I was committed to being a good student and wanted to feel better.

Hindsight is 20/20 and now I can see clearly where I went wrong. And, I would like to save you time and money in understanding what it really means to look within.

Okay, I going invite you to take a giant leap with me.

You have thoughts but you are not your thoughts.

You have a body but you are not your body.

So, looking within is to look deeper then your personal thoughts and physical body.

Imagine peeling an onion, layer after layer. What is at the center of that onion?

When you look within you are doing the same thing as peeling back the layers of an onion.

What you will find is an invisible power that lives within you that has an intelligence designed for your success and wellbeing.

Every human being has the ability to recognize this invisible power. The key is that your true power comes via insight and not your intellect.

When people have even the smallest insight into their true nature it has tremendous implications in every aspect of life.

People’s relationships improve, professionals find their mojo, employee engagement improves, people who suffer from stress and anxiety find peace of mind. The list goes on and on.

Listen to a recent podcast with Chris Robinson and myself as we share our insights from looking in the right direction and how it applies in business and beyond.

If you would like my help understanding where to look to find the solutions to any problem you have, consider joining me at my next 3 Day State of Mind Coaching Immersion where I teach people how their minds work and what is means to look within.

A New Way To Think About Purpose

I attended an event this past weekend where there were 16 passionate speakers, many of them were TEDx speakers.

A majority of the speakers were pointing to the fact that if people don’t have a purpose they’re prone to loneliness, depression and a lack of meaning in their lives.

As I engaged with fellow participants, there was a  both a palatable anxiousness and/or excitement in people’s desire to find their purpose.

Like purpose is somehow the missing link to a high quality life experience.

You see the presenters made a logical and compelling presentation with regards to human suffering, and finding your purpose was offered as a prescription to living a better life than the one they are currently living.

Time to Reflect

So my question is,

Is it true people need to find and live their purpose in order to have a high quality life?

I would like to encourage you to explore purpose for yourself.

1. What does purpose look like to you?

2. What are your ideas about purpose?

3. What do all human being share in common when it comes to purpose?

And The Most Miserable People Are…

In my own personal experience along with my experience of working with hundreds and hundreds of people over the last 25 years.

What I’ve discovered is people in search of purpose or in the pursuit of happiness are some of the most miserable and anxious people I’ve ever met.

So here’s the problem as I see it, people have innocently made  purpose a thing.

Purpose is not a thing, it’s actually a feeling.

And it is this feeling that has the power to guide people through life, helping them navigate the up’s and down’s.

Here’s the real problem, human suffer and struggle and have a wide range of human experiences. This is true.

The problem is human beings don’t know the source of their experience.

And if they did they would stop looking outside of themselves for prescriptions to live a better life that alone would improve their quality of life.

Most people are looking at purpose as a prescription for living a better life.

Once they find their purpose, align with their purpose and live their purpose their life will be more rewarding and fulfilling is their logic.

The problem is that’s not how purpose and meaning actually works.

Looking for your purpose creates the same amount of anxiety as a lost set of car keys, it makes people really anxious and stressed out.

It also bums people out for the fact that they don’t know something or have lost something.

When people get bummed out they typically start to blame themselves or make themselves wrong for the fact that they’ve lost their car keys and in this case they have lost their purpose or their purposes has some how eluded them.

Finding, aligning, in living your purpose is not the solution to a low quality of life.

Looking In New Direction

What is necessary is understanding the human experience.

What matters most is to understand where your experience is actually coming from.

When people stop anxiously searching for their purpose but instead spend more time understanding the nature of life and the nature of the human experience what people often find is that their purpose finds them.

Natures Clue

I often share the following analogy with people about purpose.

Honey bees wake up every morning thinking that their purpose in life is to harvest nectar and make honey.

When in truth a honey bee’s greater purpose is at a 90 degree angle of their honey making intention.

You could say that the honey bees real purpose is to cross pollinate.

Human beings are like money bees. Waking up each day chasing the nectar of life to make money.

And if human beings would simply, stop, reflect and look in a new direction, they too would see that they are already part of a much greater purpose.

You already have a purpose but you just looking in the wrong direction.

I am on a mission to help people stop searching for things outside of themselves and commit to looking within as their primary goal in life.

An Interview with San Diego Voyager

Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Clowminzer.

Greg, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.

I was a stressed-out young professional who was disillusioned with my career path and lifestyle back in the day. I was on a fast track at the time and became a partner and vice president of a commercial investment real estate company specializing in sales and acquisition of multi-family properties. I was very active in the community and held several leadership positions at both a local and state level.

The good news is I was making a decent living which afforded me to invest in myself. As I begin learning about myself and what made me tick and I started to get really excited about what I was learning and couldn’t wait to share it with others. Although I was quite shocked that others didn’t share my same enthusiasm for my new understandings. Read more

Rules of Engagement – The Basics for Effective Communication

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place. -George Bernard Shaw

Your Guide To Being A Better Communicator and Listener

Being a better communicator and listener begins with a commitment to peace, love and understanding.

I believe that much of the suffering in the world could be reduced if people would simply adhere to what I call, Rules of Engagement – The basics of effective communication.

I have put together the following list of ways to show up in a conversation that allows for true understanding to occur.

Although many of the skills seem obvious, it takes practice and a real commitment to adhere to them.

• See communication as an opportunity and a gift rather than a challenge or threat.
• Communication improves when you slow down.
• Don’t interrupt when someone is speaking.
• Don’t criticize, judge or make someone wrong.
• Listen to understand versus reply.
• Maintain good eye contact when possible.
• Be an open and nonjudgmental listener.
• Speak in “I” statements.
• Avoid he said, she said.
• Only share your deepest truth.
• Be able to distinguish facts from judgments, opinions, assumptions and feelings.
• Eliminate gossip.
• Be direct and ask for what you want.
• Practice a high quality of attention when listening.
• Practice self-awareness before speaking.
• If you don’t understand something ask for clarification.
• Acknowledge the speaker.
• Be generous with your listening.
• Let others speak first.
• Set aside preconceived ideas.
• Understand the subject that you are communicating about. Don’t wander off-topic or subject.
• Welcome all thoughts, feelings and insights without invalidating.
• Become comfortable with silence and pregnant pauses.
• Ask a well thought out question, wait and listen.
• Go deeper with one question.
• Refrain from interrogating.
• Commit to getting yourself understood to the best of your ability.
• Own your judgments, feelings and reactions as your stuff, don’t make it about someone else.
• Reduce or eliminate self referencing.
• Be present to what’s arising in your own consciousness and communicate that.
• Receive and release another’s communication.
• Avoid trip laying.
• Ask, don’t tell.
• Get permission before offering feedback, coaching or advice.

Every relationship issues boils down to a lack of understanding.

And a lack of understanding is very costly in both the workplace and home life.

Please share this guide for effective communication with friends, family, and co-workers.
